Corrections Program
The Department of Corrections participates in the telemedicine programs at VCUHS using real-time videoconferencing.
The benefits to the DOC are the cost efficiencies in transportation and personnel, as well as enhanced public safety. The inmates are pleased with the care as well, as they do not have to travel and wait several hours for their appointment.
The benefit to VCUHS is the increased efficiency of visiting several patients who are present and ready to be seen, without leaving the telemedicine office. Patient compliance with prescribed treatment drastically improves, as seen in HIV care.
This program is currently expanding, to include more prisons in eastern Virginia, and more specialty areas providing services.
