Volunteer Services FAQs
Where is the Volunteer Services office located?
We are located on the first floor of Main Hospital, Room 414. You can find detailed directions on the Contact Us page.
Is there a minimum number of hours you have to volunteer?
There is no minimum number of hours required, however we do ask that you commit to volunteer once a week during your assigned time for six months. (College Students are required to volunteer for one full semester.)
How long does the health screening and orientation process take?
It usually takes volunteers about 3 weeks to complete the necessary health screening and orientation.
Why do I have to go through all of that health screening?
We understand the health screening process does take time. For the safety of our staff, patients, visitors, and volunteers, we must follow the infection control guidelines set forth by the hospital.
What is the minimum age requirement?
Adult and College/ Grad Student Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Our Summer Junior Volunteer Program is for high school students ages 14-17.
Can I volunteer in the evening or on weekends?
Yes, some units do need help in the evenings or weekends. Those are marked with an * on the volunteer opportunities link under the adult volunteer page.
What should I do if I get sick and can not volunteer?
If you are unable to volunteer due to an injury or illness please contact your unit supervisor as soon as possible. Supervisor contact information is available in the Volunteer Services office.
Once I complete Orientation and Health Screening can I continue to volunteer as long as I like?
Yes, we would like to have you as a volunteer as long as possible. If you are with us for more than a year you will be required to take an annual TB Test as well as complete re-orientation on the anniversary of your start date.
If I don’t like where I am volunteering, can I change units?
We want all of our volunteers to be happy in their placements. If you are unhappy please speak to a Volunteer Services staff member and we’ll work with you to fix the problem or help you find another area.
I would like to donate items to the hospital, what should I do?
As always, we appreciate your generosity, and will gladly accept your donations. We will always accept used books and magazines; however toys and other items must be new. Please contact the Volunteer Services office to inform us of your donation and to discuss drop off options.
