The Rehabilitation and Research Center's general rehabilitation program is proud to be the oldest continuous inpatient rehab program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We first opened our doors in 1952 and have strived to provide specialized and skilled care to our patients ever since. VCU Medical Center  has been certified by The Joint Commission (TJC) as a primary Stroke Center, for our excellent continuum of care.  Our general rehabilitation program provides comprehensive therapy and care for patients with a wide range of diagnoses, including:

  • CVA or" Strokes"
  • Amputations and Vascular Disorders
  • Orthopedics ( including hip and knee replacements)
  • Poly-trauma
  • Deconditioning

General Rehabilitation Education Program:
For our patients with general rehabilitation needs, we provide an educational series that focuses primarily on home safety and overcoming barriers encountered with going home: 

  • Home Safety with an Occupational Therapy focus
  • Home Safety with a Physical Therapy focus
  • Community Reintegration and Community Barrier Awareness
  • Stroke warning signs and prevention
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Diabetic management

Discharge Planning:
Our experienced team of Therapists, Social Workers, Nurses and Medical Staff will ensure that you and your family are provided with all of the required training and education needed for your discharge home.  The social worker and follow- up care coordinator will also provide you with a smooth transition to your next step of therapy.
