The Department of Psychiatry offers a full continuum of programs and services to meet the mental health needs of Richmond residents and the referral needs of clinicians from around the Commonwealth of Virginia and the surrounding region. These programs and services are unsurpassed in their application of the latest research and clinical knowledge.

Each inpatient treatment team is led by a faculty psychiatrist who specializes in the research and treatment of a specific area of mental illness. This focused knowledge-base makes the inpatient service uniquely suited to treat the primary care patient as well as those who have experienced a relapse or treatment failure in other mental health settings. Inpatient care is provided by the following subspecialty teams: Medical Psychiatry Services, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, Affective Disorders Services, Geriatric Psychiatry Services, Schizophrenia Services, Short Treatment and Assessment.

A 23-hour Crisis Stabilization Unit is available for patients who require rapid stabilization and intensive crisis intervention until the patient is psychiatrically stabilized and community resource support can be arranged.

A wide range of child and adolescent services can be found at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, recognized as a regional resource for the assessment and treatment of a variety of psychiatric and behavioral problems affecting young people. Programs offered include Acute Inpatient, Residential Treatment, Day Treatment, Outpatient Care and Specialty Clinics.

Assessment and treatment of sleep disorders is provided at the Sleep Disorders Center, located at 2529 Professional Road. The Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic, located at the Henrico Doctors Parham Campus medical office building, offers in-depth assessments of elderly patients with a special emphasis on memory disorders.
